National Treasure Mustang Rescue and Sanctuary
Providing safety and loving care to iconic native wild equine removed by our government from their homes in the west.
Meet our new rescues!! June 28, 2024
We rescued 2 burros (Seven Troughs HMA) and 1 filly (Twin Peaks HMA) from Bureau of Land Management holding corral!! Eeyore is a 3 year old burro, Sunny is 1 year old according to the BLM and Poppy is a 1 year old filly but looks to be 6-8 months old. They are quite content to be at their new home at the sanctuary and we are happy to have them!! ❤️
Poncho and Gypsy
Two friends
These mustangs have been bonded from the very beginning. We don't know if they were removed from the wild at the same time, but they were rescued by us at the same time. I wonder what their story is. I know they are happy now.
With your support you are assuring them that their friendship is lifelong.
Brandy, Shadow, Calypso
Three Amigos
These three have been together since 2016. Don't think for a minute that mustangs and burros can't be best buddies. These three are proof of that.
Cisco
Small & Mighty
Don't let the size fool ya, Cisco is the leader. When he gives the stinkeye you better pay attention, bandmates. Don't get me wrong though, they all are bonded and are always looking out for each other. Cisco, however, thinks that ALL the treats are HIS.
We depend on tax deductible donations from our generous fans and community.

Meet the Herd
Brandy, our first rescue.
Brandy was born at Litchfield Holding Facility in Susanville, California. Her mother was rounded up 2014 from the Little Owyhee Horse Management Area. aka: HMA Brandy was almost a year old when we rescued her on March 16, 2015.
Poncho is our wildest of the wild ones
Poncho was rescued from the Carson City Prison in January 2018 as a yearling. His motto is' "Look but don't touch."
Shadow the Burro
Shadow was rescued from Litchfield Corrals in March of 2016. He is the clown of the bunch. You can't beat those cute, silly donkey antics and expressions. He was rounded up/captured from the McGee Mountains in Nevada. We are going to add more burros as soon as we can. They are fast disappearing under the "management" of the Bureau of Land Management.
Calypso, Mr. friendly and burro buddy
Calypso was rescued with Shadow the burro at the same adoption event. They shared the same prison at Litchfield Corrals in Susanville, CA. Calypso was removed from Humboldt HMA in 2015 and was sprung from jail with his buddy in March 2016 as a yearling.
Cisco, he might be small, but he's the first in charge
Cisco was busted out of the Carson Prison, along with Poncho and Gypsy, who you are about to meet. He is not as timid around people as Poncho, but he is awfully curious. He is a bit of a clown, like the burro and you will enjoy watching his videos. Cisco was born on the Virginia Range along with Poncho and Gypsy and were added to our sanctuary in January 2018. He comes with hints of ancient bloodlines.
Gypsy, the other girl, sweet and beautiful
Gypsy came from the Virginia Range and was bailed from the Carson Prison along with Poncho and Cisco in January 2018. She is always there for breakfast and treats and is willing to share her hay with her friends. She looks like polished brass in the sunshine.

Our Mission
Watch us run
There is a huge need for safe sanctuary for wild horses and burros. Our mission is to provide that to as many at risk mustangs and burros as possible. We dream big here. We want to expand with more land, more rescues and many supporters.
They may have been stripped of their rightful lands where they were born and the loss of their freedom, but our mission is to give them back the safety and enough room to run, play and enjoy a natural place again.
We will save these iconic national treasures. We will gentle, feed, provide hoof care, vet care, training and above all, love and kindness. We will get them ready for adoption when possible and will have a strict vetting process and adoption contracts to assure a lifetime of love and safety.
Our mission is only possible with the support of people who love them as much as we do. Let’s do this, horse heroes!!❤️

Hello & Welcome!
Sponsor a Mustang or Burro
WE CAN’T DO WHAT WE DO WITHOUT SPONSORS!
With the high cost of hay and feed, along with medical, dental and farrier expenses, sponsoring a horse helps us continue to care for our horses in need. It costs about $10 per day to feed a horse and National Treasure is home to approximately 11 animals.
There are many people who contribute to the recovery and care of our mustangs and burros. Each has a distinct and critical role.
Our dedicated volunteers provide daily food and water. They muck the stalls and pastures while providing a dose of TLC.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SPONSOR A HORSE?
Sponsorship makes it financially possible for National Treasure to provide for these horses and keep them safe. Our sponsors make a monthly contribution to the care of a specific horse. These donations go directly toward the expenses for that particular animal. Sponsorships put a dent in the care and feed costs for each horse or burro, and one of our goals is to secure a sponsor for each horse and burro we care for at National Treasure.
Sponsorship is one excellent way for people who can’t volunteer to get involved.
WHY SPONSOR A HORSE?
- Make your heart feel good! Sponsorship is a vital contribution to our mission to rescue and rehabilitate horses. It allows people who want to help but are too far away or who are unable to volunteer a significant way to join our effort.
- Your sponsorship frees up funds to allow the rescue and rehabilitation of more horses who need help.
- The program is a month-to-month donation so you can stop at any time.
- Your sponsorship is a tax-deductible donation.
HOW MUCH DOES SPONSORSHIP COST?
Sponsorship costs as much (or as little) as you’d like to pay each month! It’s a recurring payment, but you choose the amount that works for you. Sponsors who contribute $50 or more a month will receive a gift related to your sponsored Mustang or burro every couple of months. A $100 sponsorship will get a monthly gift! We will send gifts on occasion as a thank you to all sponsors.
The cost of food, hay, and basic care per horse is approximately $10 per day, or $300 per month. Dental care and any medical care are above and beyond that.
Our goal is to obtain sponsorships that total $300 per month for each horse in our care.
HOW LONG IS THE COMMITMENT TO SPONSOR?
There is no commitment! You may cancel your sponsorship at any time. Simply click on the link in the email you receive in regards to your recurring donation. It will bring you to your account and you can change your payment options (or cancel) there. If you have any trouble, you can contact us through our contact us page.
DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT SPONSORSHIP?
If you have any questions about Sponsorship or want to inquire about a particular horse, please send your question through our contact us page.
